To me, the Wedge mouthpiece concept represents the absolute cutting edge of mouthpiece design. I am not normally inclined to experiment with equipment, and have been happy with the same mouthpiece for at least a decade - but when I heard about what Dr. Dave was up to and how much the ergonomic design had helped my colleagues, I had to try it. Once I met Dave and visited his workshop, I knew that what he is doing is absolutely one of a kind, and that he is one of the most intelligent and meticulous craftsmen I'd been around - and there are a lot of "mouthpiece guys" out there!
Switching to the Wedge rim was easy and quick - in the first month, I played numerous concerts and a two-week recording session (for the newest Canadian Brass release, 'Takes Flight') - and several things became instantly clear: I had magically stopped getting anywhere near as fatigued, I was playing more efficiently and easily throughout all registers, I had added at least a 3rd to my range, and most importantly, I had never been happier with how I sounded during playback.
Now that I'm using Dr. Dave's very first one-piece Wedge horn mouthpiece, I'm all in. As Dave and I continue to work together, I can say he's not only a great craftsman and a great guy; he's a true professional making mouthpieces unlike any others in the world.
Eric Reed Signature French Horn Mouthpiece
We are very excited to intorduce our first one piece French horn mouthpiece in the form of the E Reed mouthpiece, designed for Eric reed of the Canadian Brass.
The E Reed incorporates a Wedge rim with our new Double Oval Cup (DOC) design that continues the oval shape of the rim into the cup and down to the throat of the mouthpiece. The DOC design produces superior core in the sound with improved articulation.
The ID of the E Reed is .680 inches measured at .03 inches below the crest of the rim. The OD is 1.01 inches and the lateral dip is 20/1000. The cup is medium deep, similar to a Moosewood B cup, their most popular size. The throat is a .161 inch #20 drill size. This is a great all round mouthpiece.
