French Horn Mouthpieces

Now Available - One Piece French Horn Mouthpieces

We are now making custom one piece Wedge French horn mouthpieces. Send us your French horn mouthpiece for scanning. We will program a new cup and rim from the data with the same technique used for our very successful DOC (Double Oval Cup) trumpet mouthpieces. We will then machine a new custom Wedge version of your mouthpiece. The new mouthpiece will play much like the original but with the typical Wedge features of a more even response in all registers, more core in the sound, and better flexibility.

These are being offered now at an introductory price of $175 for silver and $230 for gold.

Screw Rims

French horn screw rims are available using 750 - 36 (Moosewood, Giardinelli, Osmun, Warburton) and 800-36 (Paxman and Halstead-Chidell) threads.

Stock Rims

Stock rims are $95 for silver and $118 for gold and $115 stainless steel. These rims are made as needed. Call or email to discuss your order.

Stock PHC sizes with 800-36 threads include US1, US2, N, S, S18, AN, AS-18. Other stock rims with 750-36 threads currently include Bach 7, Stork 0 4.75, Laskey 80G, and Moosewood 5.

Custom Rims

Custom French horn screw rims are available in either PHC 800-36 or Giardinelli / Moosewood compatible 750-36  threads. Custom rims are $152 for silver, $175 for gold and $172 for stainless steel. This price includes programming, machining, and plating a new rim to your specifications.

The best results are obtained if you send your complete mouthpiece, or at least the rim, to be scanned. However, if you choose not to send your mouthpiece we can make a custom rim if you provide the following information:

1. ID of your cup where it joins the rim.

2. ID of the rim as specified by the manufacturer. This is usually .03 to .04 inches below the crest height of the rim.

3. OD of the rim.

4. Exact length of the mouthpiece measured with a digital caliper with and without the rim attached.

5. The bite radius of the rim is also helpful.

If your current mouthpiece does not have threads we can convert it to accept a screw rim with either thread type for $35. Call Dr Dave to discuss the details of your order.

I think many horn players struggle with their high range and endurance. In a brass quintet, these issues are exacerbated by our directional inadequacy and lots of loud playing. Horn parts in quintet are frequently all over the instrument, and do not lend themselves to "playing easy." Since switching to a Wedge rim, I've noticed it's much more conducive to playing easy, and when I'm able to do it I can play for much longer than before, I can play considerably higher than before, and I have much more grip when navigating the various registers of the instrument. It's helped my endurance, range and fluidity between registers. I love it, and have been telling my friends!
