Dr. Dave Harrison
Some people have expressed curiosity about who I am, so this is for those who are interested.
Trumpet
I have been playing the trumpet since I was 13 years old. I played all through high school in the concert band and stage band. During pre-med, medical school, and residency I played in a variety of community bands and orchestras. I am now principle trumpet in the Richmond Orchestra, a 40 piece community orchestra and chorus in Richmond , British Columbia. I also play regularly on the worship team of Kitsilano Community Church , where I attend with my family.
Professional (in case anybody cares)
Following graduation from medical school in 1983 I completed a 3 year residency in Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine. After one year of working in a medium sized emergency department I embarked on a second residency in order to obtain my specialty certification in Emergency Medicine. I have been on staff as an Emergency Physician at Vancouver General Hospital since 1990. I have been Medical Director of the VGH Hyperbaric Unit since 2003. Most of my practice now involves Diving/Hyperbaric Medicine and research, and teaching, with a few shifts per month in the Emergency Department.
KIDPOWER (this is important)
KIDPOWER Vancouver is a registered non profit society in Vancouver, Canada dedicated to teaching people of all ages and abilities how to act wisely, stay safe, and believe in themselves. KIDPOWER teaches a full spectrum of safety skills, ranging from everyday safety to full force fighting using a certified padded instructor. KIDPOWER Vancouver is part of a larger organization, KIDPOWER/TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER International.
I am the Center Director and Padded Instructor for KIDPOWER Vancouver . I am also a member of the Senior Leadership Council for KIDPOWER/TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER International and a part of the training team for new instructors. I became involved in KIDPOWER after many years of training in martial arts when I found myself teaching personal safety to my own kids, their friends, their friend's mothers, and a bunch of nurses from the ED in my basement. I decided that I should get connected to a parent organization to make sure I was doing the best job possible in making people safer. My work with KIDPOWER Vancouver is easily as rewarding as anything I have experienced in 20 years as a physician.
